Weekly Global Conflict OSINT Report (January 2nd – January 8th)

Summary

  • Wildfires that flared up on the 7th of January persist in the Southern California area resulting in some of the largest scale destruction in years.
  • Israel continues combat actions against Hezbollah elements in Lebanon meanwhile the Lebanese Army maintains their defensive posture against HTS-aligned attackers from Syria.
  • An attempted coup or attack on the President of Chad was foiled by the Chadian military.

North America

Incident: Starting on the 7th of January, massive wildfires in Southern California ravage the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles and remain a significant threat. California has deployed the National Guard and is receiving additional assistance from Canadian firefighting units. Additional relevant information is available in the listed sources.

Threat Level: High

Risk Mitigation Recommendations: Anyone residing in the Southern California area should follow all local guidelines and advisories to evacuate if it has been declared in your area. Future mitigation efforts will require an overhaul and modernization of existing firefighting equipment and protocols to contain large fires.

Western Asia – Middle East

Incident: On the 2nd of January, Israel launched multiple airstrikes on the Iqlim al-Tuffah area of southern Lebanon. While the airstrikes violated the ceasefire agreement, Israel claimed they were striking Hezbollah troops attempting to move south of the Litani which would itself be a violation of the ceasefire. Israel launched additional airstrikes on Syria around the same time targeting Scud facilities and defense factories east of Aleppo.

Threat Level: Intermediate

Risk Mitigation Recommendations: Civilians living near the Litani River should be willing to report suspicious movement to the appropriate authorities to prevent new fighting from escalating. However, at this time, the safer option may still be to stay away from the Litani River and any areas Israel may still view as a threat to their forces.

Incident: On the 3rd of January, skirmishes between the Lebanese Army and the new HTS-led Syrian Government took place near the Ma’arboun-Baalbek area. Reportedly, despite sending a delegation to de-escalate, HTS is still amassing troops near the border.

Threat Level: Low

Risk Mitigation Recommendations: For the time being, fighting between Lebanon and HTS remains relatively low though civilians living near the border with Syria may want to consider moving away from the border if they deem it necessary. At this time, no actions are necessary.

Central Africa

Incident: On the 8th of January, a group of unknown militants, believed to be affiliated with Boko Haram, attacked the presidential palace in N’Djamena, Chad. At least 18 of these attackers were killed by military forces however very little information is currently available on this incident.

Threat Level: N/A

Risk Mitigation Recommendations: N/A
